As of late (I'd say about since Fall 2014), less and less quality Touhou art has been uploaded to pixiv, danbooru, zerochan, and other image sharing websites. For those like myself that like saving fanart, this is actually kind of frustrating. Yeah, Touhou still reigns upon the fanart world still since it's packing over 430,000 pics on danbooru, but what the hell happened? Well...I feel Kantai Collection is the cause of this drought.
KanColle stated getting really big last year, especially after Comiket 86 (over the summer). After that, from what I've been seeing, a lot of good pixiv artists who mainly drew Touhou completely shifted to KanColle. Some don't even draw Touhou pics anymore. This honestly kinda blows. I mean, KanColle is interesting, and all, but it's popularity skyrocking is resulting in the decline of Touhou's popularity (at least on image sharing sites).

Comiket is also having a decrease in Touhou circles over the past year. Coincidence? I think not.
too bad all the good artists are either dropping off the face of the planet or, much worse, drawing kantai collection stuff. I really only look at the art of my followed artist's on pixiv, but it's like "holy fuck stop not drawing touhou" whenever they draw not touhou.
maybe it's because, like, the series has kinda slowed down a bit, not really getting new releases with new girls for over a year or so.

all we need is a new touhou game where fifty kajillion new girls are introduced where they have stripperfic clothes, absolutely no personality and are subservient to a Rinnosuke-type dude
For real though, I couldn't really mind too much. They'll come back after ULiL and Touhou 15 come out.

Touhou still reigns supreme amongst the Pixiv community with over 1,546,253 pieces of artwork; however, I theorized previously that a matter of perspective additionally played a crucial role in this little kerfuffle, that it's possible that, because of the sheer quality and amazement you possesses when first witnessing Touhou fanart isn't present after having become used to it. I later discarded this hypothesis in exchange for KanColle uprising. Recently, upon further inspection on Google Trends, Touhou is having a quantity surge at the moment, thanks to Comiket and possible Memories of Phantasm, although Touhou was declining during last year's Comiket, so Memories of Phantasm might hold a larger portion of our fate then initially expected. Expanding on Wander's proposal the Touhou would receive more popularity during Touhou 15 and such, Touhou's highest point of popularity was during Double Dealing Character's release, showing the importance of official release and not just fanworks that drive the community.

It seems extreme bizarre to think that is the cause, but it appears so. 500,000 views in two weeks is quite impressive for fan content, even by Touhou standards. I wouldn't fully commit to Memories of Phantasm holding the trophy for our recent popularity surge, there may still be others whom assisted as well.

Competitive fighting games usually are recognized and played quite often, build popularity very quickly and aren't normally sleeper-hits. I say ULiL will have a moderate to significant impact on the community, albeit the seeming lack of new characters puts a portion of the fan-base off.

Our biggest fear for the stability and consistency of the fandom was the results of the KanColle anime, which, when according to Google Trends, KanColle has had a significant increase since October, reaching 100 Status with little to no decrease even there.

Instead of basking on the near-decade of quality fan art over all this time the games have been running (almost 19 years!) some of you have already jumped on the doomsaying bandwagon, proclaiming "2HU IS DIEIN BCUZ KANCOLE WAAAHHHH". Excuse my language, but COME THE FUCK ON, PEOPLE!As a doujin product, Touhou's longevity (and arguably its popularity) is unprecedented and is likely to be unequalled in the future, no matter what challenges it. - Kancolle is only one game. Versus about 20 for Touhou, plus hundreds of fangames.
- Kancolle's creators aren't as revered as ZUN is.
- Kancolle's nature as a browser game alienates western fans. Versus Touhou and its appreciable fanbase.
- Kancolle isn't exactly renowned for its music.
- Kancolle isn't exactly renowned for its symbolism, either.

Couldn't have said it better myself, especially considering, if I remember correctly, KanColle is a browser game ran off my currency, and when popularity drops, the company will most likely abandon the project henceforth that happening. |

Venting is good. But you have to make sure what you're saying is valid.
They aren't quite saying that Kancolle is killing Touhou
They're observing the trend that Kancolle is getting popular, and Touhou is getting less popular.
And asserting that they're probably related
Try to not put words in other peoples mouths.
worrying over what you like isn't entitlement
(Course, shitting on Kancolle because it's draining popularity is stupid. But I'm sure people have other reasons.)
