nameschonvergeben brought up this idea today and we and some others had a discussion over it. If MarisaC were to activate her shield at some point in a run, but never hit anything, would the run still count as NB? When you think about it, it would obviously not count considering she activated her 'bomb'. But with the way it works, it activates...but doesn't do anything unless she were to get hit by a bullet. Spell cards aren't even failed when it's used during them. This is a pretty curious topic.

Obviously, it wouldn't count. You pressed X and lost your power as a result, signifying a bomb. If you were doing an LNB run, you wouldn't even consider doing that anyway.
(And more often than not a run which does do that is bound to get hit somewhere).
Regardless of whether you got hit or not, a bomb is a bomb.

I'm not entirely sure myself, but voted "Yes". Btw, the reason you'd want to activate a bomb is that it makes your shot stronmger in some places (eg Okuu's final spell) If you activate a bomb, you do not lose your Spell Card Bonus. To me, it seems like ZUN didn't intend for it do count as a bomb usage. It doesn't clear any bullets or collect power-ups or anything. It does not help you dodge. By comparison, PCB's borders do help you dodge, since you can abuse the small invincibility period after a border. The only thing MariC's bomb does is make you stronger and in that sense, it's most similar to collecting a red power-up item. Oh and pressing X and losing power are not indications of using a bomb, both of those can happen without you bombing. Failing a spell without missing is the best indication imo.

Voted no, because if you use bombs in a run to get an advantage it's obviously not a "no bomb" run

If you lose the 1.0 power from using the bomb, that's as if you just lost a bomb in games with the normal system, which counts as bombing in my book. So I voted no.

So basically, your question is "Is it still no bomb if I use a bomb?"
Why is this even a question? Why do you ask this? It's not no bomb the moment you press x regardless of the circumstances.

Nice, custom rules :3 I want one too. Deaths don't count if it was just something silly easy anyway. Tfw already 2 LNNs and didn't even have to work for them

It's not no bomb the moment you press x regardless of the circumstances. I can mash X all I want during a death or a trance, doesn't mean I use a bomb The question is more, when do you actually use the bomb? When you activate it, or when you clear the screen with it? According to spell cards bonuses, you only use it if you get hit.

To answer in a more serious manner. Why would you EVER want to do this though? If it gives you a benefit in any way then obviously using the bomb to get that benefit voids the condition and if you get hit, well then the bomb is used as well imo.
You may not use the bomb to avoid getting hit but if you're using the bomb to get more damage output on certain things (apparently) then you're still using the bomb for that eh? Should be pretty clear when you are using a mechanic in a game then you are using it.

I don't see why this is a question. You still lose power, which should be enough to count as a bomb in SA.

According to spell cards bonuses, you only use it if you get hit. Let me rephrase then. it's not no bomb anymore the moment you press x and it does anything at all. You activate the shield with MarisaC, that counts as something happening, so no. it's not NB. Bombing is when you activate it, regardless of whether SA still gives you the spell bonus. I think this is one of the few things most people will agree on.

I don't see why this is a question. Morth brought it up, we talked about it with Relick and Zig for a while, I posted this topic for activity and because we were curious. Simple as that.
