... How I spent three straight days 'discovering' that even thinking to mention "PC-98 Characters for the next Touhou" is essentially flamebait on any forum sans this one. (Fun fact :Mima seems tp bear the brunt of the hatred simply for being the most iconic and the most common punchline.)
Anyone else disappointed at how little civil discussion exists for this subject?
P.S. To Staff: I know there's a Touhou games subforum, but from a cursory glance it looked to be far more gameplay oriented than my prompt so I opted to play it safe and post this here. Almost considered posting it in Suika's tavern instead.

I've never really encountered any, say, difficulty discussing the PC-98 characters in the next windows game, mostly because i talk to the same people but that's beside the point. Anyway, maybe because a decent amount of the fandom is clamoring for their return, that another faction of it seems to get annoyed when any of the pc98 characters (barring Reimu, Marisa, Yuuka, and Alice) seem to be brought up. That would be my guess.
I would like it if they came around but I'm guessing it's an impossibility.

Well this is a better response than I got anywhere else over the past few days.
Hm, I actually don't know a lot about the PC-98 Era, what is it about 98!Reimu that you like, Vexing Wave? Or it just that you dislike Modern!Reimu?
I don't see much harm in bringing back the old characters - maybe Jun'ya Ota finds it too much of a hassle to risk upsetting the fanbase? Oh~ what if the people who want those characters back complain if their new appearances upset the fanon. Even with how little is defined in the official games, there's still so much you can define - so much you can wipe out - with just a few throw away lines.
Oh, the joys and pains of riddle wrapped in amystery inside an enigma drowned in all that sake.

ZUN/Jun'ya Ota can put the characters in if he wanted to, but from what it seems, he doesn't know how to explain their reappearance in the current era- barring the characters that've already shown up. I'm sure the fans would really like it if they came back, and i think he's tried to appease them before, if parts of UFO being in Makai and Byakuren having similar attacks with Shiki is anything to go by. So... yeah.

PC-98 Reimu just has a more likeable attitude and seems to actually do things for reasons other than, because it's her duty, like PoDD, ofr example, or because she wants to train, as is the case in HRtP, she is actually in my top 20 because of all of this, in contrast the new Reimu seems to represent the opposite of my ideals, such as doing things only for duty, and relying on potential and never really using hard work to improve herself. pushing her to my bottom 10 characters. That's how I feel about both Reimus

I'd love more of the Mystic Square cast being imported into modern games, despite it being pretty much agreed to be an "EoSD Prototype", save Alice. Yumemi and co. seems like a good candidate for a revisit, considering that ULiL opened up Gensokyo somewhat to the Outside World. It'd be an interesting tie-in. Hopefully not in another Phantasmagoria game.

If I remember correctly, the PC-98 characters are still very much alive, but ZUN would feel weird just re-introducing them, so he's waiting for the right opportunity. Something like that. (Now if only I could find the source for that...) I'd like to see some HRtP characters return, if only to get more character development for them beyond just name + title + location. Mima... I don't really feel the hype. If you look at the series as a whole, she's been in four games, which is already more than many of the Windows era characters. Sure, it would be nice to see her return, but please, I'd like to look at a comment section on a YouTube video of Reincarnation or Complete Darkness without 80% of the comments whining about Mima's return. |

I'd agree on PC-98 comebacks but Yumemi, hell yes. I actually do want her as an extra stage boss in LOLK cause.. 1. She only had 1 appearence. 2. Shes the main enemy in that appearence. 3. LOLK may have a similar plot to rather PODD or IN... |
