Yes, I'm doing this, because making these is fun and I want to spread the FUN~!
I assume 100% zoom on Google Chrome.
Lesson 1: Do you even size?
Images should be 170 px wide, and height depends on how many lines your info takes up, but the taller the better is a general rule.
If cropping to 170 px wide directly is too cropped, use imgur, photoshop, or gimp to resize the image to 170 px wide from the desired amount of cropping.
Lesson 2: Finding Avatar locations
Avatars should be 150 x 150 boxes... but how do we find where they are?
This is one of the images I use as a reference. See how my avi is a plain green box? Of course you do, it's glaringly obvious.
I copied and pasted the image into paint, and began using the select tool to select where the green box is... but look in the lower left hand corner!
AS you can see, paint tells you the coordinates of where you started selecting and how big your selection is currently. In this case, my selection began at 10, 118 and is 159 x 150 px.
When you aren't in the middle of selecting, paint will tell you where the mouse is in the image at the moment.
Lesson 3: Background Extension
Extending a background is tough stuff. There are three things I use for it:
Flip Vertical -> extend bottom (paint)
Smudge tool (Gimp)
Blur tool (Gimp)
Paint Bucket (Paint and Gimp)
I can't really give detailed advice beyond this, since I'm not too good at it myself.
