Its my experience that those who spend 7 months clearing an extra stage are the slowpokes. That's okay though. I take a long time about things too as I play quite casually compared to the more goal oriented people. If you're not gonna survive 7 months of playing, then you probably wouldn't amount to much anyways lel

I can safely say that when I fist started playing Touhou, I could barely get past Keine in IN Easy while continuing. And I can easily say that IN Easy was just the first step getting to where I am now, ie knowing almost everything about IN Extra and 1cc'ing IN Hard. So yeah. IN Easy is a nice way to ease into Touhou IN guru-in-training right here c:

My ex-wife has some pretty interesting strategies but still hasn't managed to beat the WR. Can you point out where to improve the current run? EDIT: Talking about IN Extra of course, requesting some of that expert knowledge. replays.gensokyo.org/download.php?id=36442I want to see her beat ASL, please offer up what you know :3

you guys may be overestimating the skill of a new player We've all been there. I started playing PCB easy with 5 starting lives. No-one here is overestimating new players since we all started off bad. I have a hard time taking this seriously, pls show us your 99/99 spell card histories. That aside, we all learn differently and we should respect how everyone learns. The only right way to play is the way you find most fun. Telling people to "ignore" those who play differently is also extremely bigoted, there's no absolutely correct way to play.

Besides, why do you need to amount to anything? Just have fun playing the games, idc if someone only plays easy.

I've just found another argument in favor of going as easy and as generous as the games allow you to.
The Bullet Hell genre is stereotyped as the HARDEST GAMES EVER, so decreasing the difficulty and increasing the starting lives is a sure-fire way to dispel that notion and reveal their true nature: they're games of persistence and learning.

Fairy Wars on either normal or easy, normal if they thrive on the challenge, easy otherwise. in addition, try all the routes for the fun factor. trying to unlock the extra stage (clear all routes, easy mode ok) is a natural goal
if for some reason someone does not like freezing things, then i'd tell them: fug of and poast you're scores xD
shoot the bullet is also a good first game but again, only if someone thrives on the challenge, since the learning curve is steep. otherwise, it is probably the best game ever at quickly teaching radical forms of streaming and just generally playing intelligently

Wait, how does making a game easier to 1cc show that it is about persistence and learning?

It comes after the first few tries that show you Bullet Hell is no impossible monster. If they find their first steps enjoyable enough to continue playing the game, they'll slowly be introduced to that notion.

Neither of which you have shown any evidence of practicing. The genre is only considered so difficult because its a very obscure one that most people only see in youtube videos. It looks a lot harder to do than it actually is. Thing is, you need to learn how to play the game first and lol, gamers nowadays aren't used to that. Most gamers prefer playing games where they watch a poorly directed and written movie for 10 hours while sometimes the game asks you for some input to ensure you're still awake. The Telltale games approach if you will. This however, is what you call a gameplay game. Touhou is not absurdly difficult but the average joe might think it is because they're used to be handheld more tightly than a baby on a city trip through New York.
As you say, its a game about persistence and learning but you simply don't do that by giving yourself a ton of resources because Touhou is already extremely forgiving in that regard. You practice your game in practice mode and try runs until you learn by doing. You don't learn anything from playing with training wheels.
That being said. If that's how you WANT to play then by all means do so. Just don't recommend it onto others. It's encouraging people to get bad.

Thing is, you need to learn how to play the game first ...and this thread is about how to learn to play touhou, not how to play thereafter. Starting off with something easy can help, if I had started with anything beyond normal I doubt that I would have enjoyed it at all.

Whoa, hold up! Then why do the training wheels even exist? I am not you, you are not me, and the new players aren't us veterans. They may actually need the extra assistance to feel at home with the game in question. Learning how to play the game isn't just the inputs, it's also the strategies, but it's also the execution of said strategies. Throwing someone headfirst into Normal difficulty might only scare them even more - easing them into a genre is always the best policy. Again, you haven't shown yourself to be able to place yourself into the shoes of lesser players. They're easy for you, because of how far you've gone, but there's no guarantee they'll be this easy to get into for another person. Again, you also forget fun comes before achievements. Why should this matter? Touhou is probably gonna be the newfie's first contact with the genre. Let him ease into it. When in doubt, insult moders games and gamers. You'll be guaranteed support from others rushing in to agree with you. *clap clap clap clap clap*

you should start with PODD or POFV as they actually teach you how to dodge (important if you want ACHIEVEMENT like LUNATIC NO MISS NO BOMB to post on forums) instead of any main game because all you're learning is how to memorize

So this thread has stayed tame for a while, which is good. It would be a shame if it went feral(hint hint) you should start with PODD or POFV as they actually teach you how to dodge (important if you want ACHIEVEMENT like LUNATIC NO MISS NO BOMB to post on forums) instead of any main game because all you're learning is how to memorize If this is a troll post, then I suggest you not try this kind of posting in the main forums. There's a time and a place for this.
