While opinions are subjective and everyone's hardest game varies between people, there is an actual hardest Touhou game. It's EoSD Lunatic. The reason why it is is because unlike other touhou games, EoSD has a scaling difficulty. The better you do, the harder the game gets. The worse you do, the easier the game gets. Many people have noticed this and probably assumed that it was just RNG, which is not the case at all. If you do very well on EoSD Lunatic, the game will be the hardest you've ever experienced. The Ultra Patch for EoSD is in fact, just Lunatic Mode with maximized difficulty meter. So yeah, EoSD Lunatic mode is the hardest.

Well I wasn't saying there wasn't RNG at all, I was just saying that some people may say certain parts were RNG when it wasn't at all.
As for PoDD, I actually didn't think of mentioning that one. I was thinking in terms of Windows Canon at the time (also I did say PoDD was the hardest game for me personally). Sorry I forgot to mention that.
When you put PC-98 and Windows Canon together, PoDD probably is legitimately the hardest game. (Outside of Gengetsu's final timed out attack obv)

It is true that there is rank in eosd. But that rank is at the maximum for most of the time when you play normally since like 300 graze are enough to maximize it. The Ultra patch raises the rank to a value that is no accessible in the game normally, so the game can not actually get that hard and most of the things don't get that much harder than how you experience them at the moment.

23. Hardest Touhou Game
- main games (integers) only
- excluding HRtP, PoDD, PoFV because they're too different; excluding GFW because I barely played it; LoLK because no full release
- assuming subjectively optimal setups (best shot, max starting resources, etc)
- 1cc objective
Easy - Perfect Cherry Blossom. From what I heard, it barely scales in difficulty, so its Easy Mode is actually very similar to Normal Mode. Which makes it pretty hard.
Normal - Subterranean Animism. The patterns are really tough. And you're forced to invest in a lot more effort into clearing this than any other candidate, especially considering that getting life pieces requires you to cut down on your deaths, thus forcing you to get good regardless. UFO loses because the patterns are milder, you could potentially get a lot of resources, and many failures are often due to player greed as opposed to difficult threats.
Hard - Undefined Fantastic Object. UFO patterns get ridiculous. They get worse than SA's stuff while still not being as vulnerable to rigid memorization as SA patterns are.
Lunatic - Undefined Fantastic Object. UFO is still the worst on Lunatic, though MS and DDC come close imo.
Extra - Story of Eastern Wonderland. Sure, one can argue that it's more of SoEW mechanics that makes Rika hard as opposed to the difficulty of her patterns, but that doesn't change the fact that she is still really hard, regardless of the reason. Even the stage sections require a lot of time investment to fully figure out, despite being almost 100% trick-based. I've been informed that GFW is tougher than this, but I haven't played that so I didn't list it.

Humm... Yukari has a pretty convenient ability, she can go to wherever she pleases with a flick of a finger. (And manipulate borders and stuff).

24. Favourite Touhou Fan game
I had a really hard time deciding between Genius of Sappheiros and Fantasy Maiden Wars, but I ultimately decided to go with Genius of Sappheiros. The gameplay is just, amazing. I especially love how well-designed the boss battles are, in that they all have their own tricks up their sleeves that force you to formulate and refine effective strategies for each boss in order to beat them, as opposed to simply relying on overgrinding like many other RPGs. Furthermore, each playable character has their own set of niches, which makes the gameplay really versatile, so different players can come up with various different approaches for beating each boss, which I find to be really cool!
The writing is also pretty well done, with the characters acting very much in-character with their canon personalities, while not delving too deep into fanon depictions (though there are still plenty of fanon components as usual).
FMW is still great though, but I prefer GoS's gameplay approach of actually having to think about how to beat bosses as opposed to just relying on the same optimized strategies to beat them.
