The danmaku games take a level of patience some of us don't have.
The fighting games are well... fighting games.
Most spinoffs are veteran-focused (except maybe ISC).

Touhou-a-Live. It's an RPG although I don't know what you'd think of it. It's challenging in the "You need to strategize" way and doesn't necessarily require grinding. I can only think of a few chapters which require actual grinding (Youmu, Kedama, Mokou, Spoiler, and Final), but if you fight out every encounter up to that point you should be ok. The rest of them (Cirno, Shang, Meiling, and Ran) don't have random battles (Meiling's sorta does, but they're finite on-screen enemies that go away after you kill them), although Cirno's chapter is notably difficult considering she replaces Masaru.
Or Touhou Mother (which is Earthbound, might require grinding), although it can get legitimately difficult at times and is a bit "where the fuck do I go"y,

Though playing Touhoumon Insane is a good supplement too.

Touhou a Live and Touhou Mother both have translations, yes. Touhou Mother is full of references though. Sanae is a Metroid reference for example

You got any tips for the Cirno chapters Zak? also I play some New Super Marisa Land or Koumajou Densetsu 2 when I'm searching for just a good time Uh.. on the top of my head, not good ones, but -i started with Hina first, i don't remember who i went with after that. -you should try to get all the moves from all the characters (2 each, 3 from Letty) but DEFINITELY get Tsuda from the man. Its a quick attack that debuffs, and it works magic, especially when trying for other characters moves (Yuuka and Suika hit notably hard) -try and have Cirno be facing Letty and Medicine when you fight them. They noth have an attack that periodically instakills you and I don't know if it matters whether or not Cirno's sprite has its back to them, but... -use the field-damaging attack you get from Hina during the fight with Letty. You'll get Cirno's ultimate attack after a cutscene plays (this is something like Masaru learning his ultimate from the Hawaiian guy, with the exception that this one doesn't hurt you) -during the fight with the boss, don't stand one square away from him diagnally Like this X----X ------ --BB-- --BB-- ------ X----X B is the Boss's sprite (not to scale, i think the actual boss is 3x2 or something) and X os the squares you shouldn't stand relative to his corners. He has a rediculously powerful attack that breaks the damage barrier (its mostly a joke and its not too intrusive if youre right next to him) |

The game is partially translated (the menu stuff), and we also have much of the dialogue completed too. We were just waiting for a stable patch before we patched it. Right now we're in patch 1.32, and everything seems to be stable. So a patch may be coming out soon. Though there's a likelyhood that this game may be patched again... |

- Gensou Shoujo Taisen (SRPG, based on the SRW series, game 1 100% translated)
- Labyrinth of Touhou 2 (Dungeon-Crawling RPG, very similar to Etrian Odyssey games, 100% translated)
