I'm thinking of making a "Mystery Adventure Thread", where people take up the role of an investigator and work alone or together to solve cases (potentially competitively). If you're interested in participating in such an idea, or have an idea on how to improve the rules below then make a post in this thread!
Here's the procedures and rules I've come up with so far:
Investigation
- A premise will be presented (e.g. a crime has been committed at X location) in a post in the thread. Several potential locations for investigation will also be given (although some locations may require the discovery of some evidence before they can be visited).
- Some basic evidence will be given from the beginning, e.g. an autopsy report and the murder weapon; if the crime was a murder.
- Investigators can choose to visit a location by sending me a PM or IM on Skype (all available actions will go through this process). They will receive a description of the scene. They can then investigate any part of the scene and look for clues. The investigators will have to decide for themselves whether what they learn is important or not for the case, and how each clue they find fits into the case. For harder cases, there could be a few red herrings!
- Investigators also have a choice of visiting the Police Station, where they can talk to their deputy (investigators can personalise the deputy's name and gender ). The deputy will give their thoughts on the case, and could help get you back on track if you are lost. However, don't rely on them too much because they may not always be able to help.
- Investigators can work with each other and share ideas, but if you are doing so then just let me know (merely for spreadsheet keeping purposes - I need to keep track of what evidence people have)
Visits and Arrests
- If an investigator feels they need to speak to someone, they can request a visit. Depending on the person, this may or may not be possible. However, it can provide useful clues that could even be crucial to solve the case. Anyone that has been mentioned in the case is valid for a request to visit.
- If an investigator believes someone to be a suspect, they may ask the police to make an arrest. This requires their name, and a likely location. A group of people can be arrested at once if they are all suspicious and in the same location at the same time. They must have been mentioned at some point in the case to be a valid target for arrest.
- Once arrested, an investigator may speak to the suspect (of course this does not guarantee their co-operation).
Indictment
- The most important part of the investigation is discovering the truth and delivering justice! If an investigator believes they have everything they need to do this, then they may indict someone (or several people). To do so, they must present the name(s) of the suspect, the crimes they have committed, and all evidence/reasoning which points to the suspect(s) being the true criminal(s).
- The investigator will be notifies if their accusation was correct, partially correct, or incorrect.
- Each investigator has three chances at submitting the correct answer in terms of scoring lots of points. A correct answer first try will score 4 points, after one strike, 3 points, after two strikes, 2 points, and any more than three incorrect answers before getting it correct will score just 1 point. There are no points for solving quickly, so take your time and think things through.
- If partially correct, the investigator can choose to take points two strikes below their current level (e.g. first try will get 2 points) and finish the case (receiving the full answer), or they can take a strike and continue to look for the correct answer (potentially allowing them to score 3 points).
- An investigator may choose to give up on a case. They will receive the correct answer but earn no points for that case.
I hope everyone interested has fun!
