As many of you know, a lot of fans in the more western oriented Touhou community have the need to split the Touhou games in "era's" I have but one simple question: why? I personally do not understand why this trend has been getting so popular. I'm especially confused why people would want to give "era's" to the windows games, it doesn't make sense at all to me, every Touhou game is unique in mechanics, art style and music style (for the ones that don't get this, ZUN has different kind of goals each time when he makes a new game, the music is always slightly different in terms of style) I find it unnecessary that the windows "era" has been grouped up in THREE different era's in the common western Touhou community I'd like your opinions on this matter

... This is like saying windows shouldn't have a number after it. It supposed to represent the updates of each game. In sound, in graphics, in everything And yeah, you put this in the right section

I think the first two Windows eras are split in an understandable way. MoF changed an awful lot from IN, like perma item collect for people besides Marisa and a totally revamped power system.
Never played DDC thogh, so can't comment on the second/third era split.

So between those eras it is (at least originally) purely technical. For the third era, it is a mix of reasons. The first is technical, as DDC is the first game to natively support 1280x960 resolution. The second reason is because ZUN wanted DDC to be the beginning of him getting back to the basics of bullet hell and avoiding all the gimmicks he introduced in games previously. I guess another reason for the introduction of the third era with DDC is that then both the first and second eras have 4 main games in them therefore keeping the eras somewhat even in terms of numbers of games It doesn't mean every Touhou game isn't different though, but generally the eras are good groupings. EoSD is a lot more similar to PCB than it is to UFO, for example, but UFO is more similar to SA than it is to DDC. I wonder, would you get rid of the divide between the PC-98 and Windows games too?

Slightly dead, but there's also a difference in main plot as well.
For instance, I believe we all agree that Touhou 10-13.5 is known as the 'Religious War' Era. Touhou 1-5 is known as the 'PC-98' Era. However, what about the Touhou 6-9? That's one I can't really label for sure. I think my best answer would be the 'Power Struggle' or 'Balance of Powers' Era. I say this because a lot of powerful foes were introduced in that time, changing the balance of Gensokyo, etc. I'm typing this as I'm sleepy, so I may come back tomorrow to edit it or w/ever.
