Had a lot of free time and my mind started to wander about. Some tme into it, i started to think "what youkai IS Rumia anyway?" Most other characters have their "species" pretty easely defined, so why was Rumia the only one different? I know that some would argue she controls Night rather than darkness since inside her ball it's noticeably colder than outside of it during the day, more so than a tree's shade. So one could see that as "When she attacks it's in a way, aways at night". Concidering Youkai are aways born from an emotion, be it from a person's, an animal's or an object's, what would Rumia come from? Not an animal since those tend to have traits of the beast that originated them. And not an object since the ones born that way carry around their "main body". So Rumia was born from humans.
What we know that she has unique to her is the night/darkness thing. What would most come from most humans towards literal darkness is fear. Fear of darkness and the night. But Rmia has another thing. She is voracious. So perhaps it's "fear of things that live in the darkness". If you ignore the powers, Rumia is the perfect stereotype of a "Youkai" with nothing much over it.
What i'm saynig here is that i like o think Rumia was born from "Human's fear of Youkai" What do you guys think?

Honestly, I'm not too sure about this myself. Zun really didn't give much hints as to what Rumia really is.
What if she's just a little kid who got a bit too happy with strange objects (the amulet on her hair), and her curiosity led to her developing her darkness powers instead?

She likely originated from human's natural fear of predatory organisms and fear of the darkness, which, as a consequence for the lack of artificial lighting resources, predators dwelled in.

Well, all weird things that exist in Gensokyo were, supposedly, created by human minds. Even the gods themselves need their faith to continue existing, so Rumia was definitely created by the human imaginary.
That said, I agree with the notion that Rumia appeared because of humanity's fear of darkness, or, to be more specific, afraid of what lurks in said darkness since Rumia herself is a flesh eating youkai, her being isn't only related to darkness.

Yeah, what Reimi said. Also, be aware that Rumia is a western youkai. So Rumia likely has some similar traits to some monster in western folklore. Though, after 14 years of this game coming out, you'd think someone may have found out what sort of youkai Rumia "might" be...
