Len'en Project (shmup-series!)

Post by Zigzagwolf on Dec 13, 2014 2:14:24 GMT
Hello everyone, as some of you probably know. I wanted to make a topic about the Len'en games, those're just like the main Touhou games a series of shmups!
The way I'll do this is by going through all the games, since it are just 3 games it shouldn't be too hard. I'll update this topic whenever a new game gets added to the series.
I'll just add this, taken from the Len'en wikia: "The Len'en Project (鏈縁Project) is a series of vertical danmaku shooting games made by JynX. Although it takes inspiration from the Touhou Project, the games are technically not fangames towards Touhou and that it's set in a separate world which features an entirely new cast of characters, therefore having its own canonicity. Also of note is that while in Touhou the characters are all female, in Len'en the characters' genders are generally left ambiguous. It is likely that their genders will never be revealed, and that it will simply be up to the player's interpretation. For convenience, this wiki will refer to them as female." So as you can see, they're technically an entire new series of shmups! Also hold in mind that not only the wiki refers to the characters as female, most people tend to do that whilst the genders are unknown; left to our interprentation.
Also before I'll start, I feel like describing who JynX is. Some of you probably already know why JynX is, yet for those who don't know.. JynX is the maker of the Touhou April Fools PC-98 videos, in which he creates an entire game + EX stage and showcases stage 6 and the EX of all PC-98 games! (In PoDD's case it's just the entire game.)
Since I feel like it's interesting to show a few examples I'll post those videos here: That's the SoEW April Fools "remake" I'll link a few others too, Since I spoke about PoDD being a different case I feel like showing that too. and of course I'll also show LLS And MS, Sadly those remakes aren't downloadable and playable, they also got EX stages but I felt like not posting those videos as this would otherwise be full of videos; this was meant to give a general vision of who JynX is anyways.
Now to start with the Len'en Project!
The Len'en Project is known to be a little harder than the Touhou games, they also have bullets that're harder to see like black and white bullets, which are used a lot in Evanescent Existence and Unearthen Miraculous Sword, in Evanescent Existence there's an EX boss which is specialised in them even!
We'll start out with Len'en Mugenri ~ Evanescent Existence, the first Len'en game that was released alongside with Unearthen Miraculous Sword.
Evanescent Existence or EE for short, is the first game in the series.
"Len'en Mugenri ~ Evanescent Existence (鏈縁无現里 〜 Evanescent Existence lit "Connecting Chain of the Unreal Land") is the first game in the Len'en Project made by JynX. As a Len'en game, it features completely new characters and locations separate from the Touhou Project. The game was produced concurrently with Earthen Miraculous Sword. The trial version was released on September 12, followed by the full version on November 18, 2013."-Len'en Wikia
The story in a nutshell according to the wiki is: "The foolish Yabusame and her friends find themselves in a strange dimension. With no clear way out, they all get lost. However, it seems like whoever reaches the "goal" first may attain something..."
I will post the full story in a spoiler-tag for those who do not want to be spoiled.
A few things I have to say to make it more understandable.
Some gameplay of EE and the EX
That's it for Evanescent Existence, now onto Earthen Miraculous Sword!
"Len'en Tasouken ~ Earthen Miraculous Sword (鏈縁蛇叢釼 〜 Earthen Miraculous Sword lit "Connecting Chain of the Snake Thicket Sword") is the second game in the Len'en Project made by JynX. As a Len'en game, it features completely new characters and locations separate from the Touhou Project. The game was produced concurrently with Evanescent Existence. The trial version was released on September 12, followed by the full version on November 18, 2013.
"-Len'en Wikia
Earthen Miraculous Sword is the first Len'en game to introduce Kuroji Shitodo as a playable character, Kuroji is the oldest of her 2 sisters which are encountered in game. Earthen Miraculous Sword is also the first game to use "flash-bombs" which are basically chargeable mini-bombs which sorta shields you, the flash bomb differs per character, you can use this bomb whilst being unfocused and holding the X button, if you are focused you'll use a normal bomb.
Another thing in the gameplay, there is also another mechanic called the "cloud flower gauge", which is represented by a five-petaled flower on the bottom-right of the screen. It fills up by defeating enemies and capturing spell cards, but it depletes when the player dies or bombs. The higher it is, the greater point multiplier will be awarded, and if you finish the game with it full, something special may happen. "The TLB will end up appearing, pretty sure the game would crash once it appears without some sort of program :V"
The story: The weather in Mugenri became exceptionally cloudy. It's up to Yabusame, Tsubakura, or Kuroji to find the perpetrator and solve the incident.

now for some played gameplay: now for the Extra Stage.. I got my own video of that so I'll post that one here too =3=
That's it for Earthen Miraculous Sword! now onto the last game.
Len'en Reiretsuden ~ Reactivate majestical imperial
Reactivate majestical imperial is also known as RMI
"Len'en Reiretsuden ~ Reactivate majestical imperial (鏈縁霊烈傳 〜 Reactivate majestical imperial lit "Connecting Chain of Raging Spirit Tales") is the third game in the Len'en Project made by JynX. As a Len'en game, it features completely new characters and locations separate from the Touhou Project. The first trial version of the game was sold at Winter Comiket 2013, and the updated public trial version was released on March 19, 2014. The full version of the game was released on October 2, 2014.
"-Touhou Wiki
"The game has three playable teams with two team members each, a story mode with 6 stages and an Extra Mode with selectable difficulty – Easy Extra Mode and Extra Mode which can be unlocked by clearing the main game on any difficulty, as well as Absurdly Extra Mode which is only unlocked once the main game is cleared on Unreal difficulty. The trial version is limited to the first three stages and first two teams (Yabusame Houren & Tsubakura Enraku, Adagumo no Yaorochi & Sukune Katano.)
The Full version got 6 stages, an easy EX, a normal EX and an absurdly Extra Mode EX. It also got Team C which consists of Kuroji Shitodo and Adagumo no Saragimaru as playable characters.
The game features several new gameplay mechanics. The player can switch between the two members of their chosen team, each of whom has their own attacks, bombs, play style and even power gauge. Team members switch out by activating a bomb or by getting hit by an enemy bullet. The team member that is not currently active is shown at the bottom edge of the screen, and moves to follow the active member. The inactive member can collect power items that fall to the bottom of the screen, as well as ghost items (which can only be collected through this method). Ghost items fill the "Spirit Jar" on the right side of the screen, which provides the player with a brief power-up for a limited time when filled - the inactive member starts attacking from the bottom edge of the screen as well the active member gains an auto-bombing shield which triggers a normal bomb in case of getting hit."-once again, from the Len'en wikia, edited the second alinia for more information.
Story: the story isn't yet translated, I'm sorry but I don't know it, once I know it I'll update this section.
I can't really say anything about the story as I said above, so I'll just link gameplay right away. The main game is played by me on hard, whilst the EX stage is played by someone else as I haven't yet uploaded my clear :V
played Gameplay: that was my hard 1cc, now for the Extra Stage.
Now this is done, I feel like posting a few funny facts and my theme preferences. I'll also post the Easy Extra Stages and the Absurdly Extra Stages of each game here, also the lunatic mode of the games is called "Unreal Mode" instead of Lunatic Mode.
First I'll add the Easy Extra's: Evanescent Existence Earthen Miraculous Sword and last but not least, Reactivate majestical imperial That's it for the Easy Extra Mode's, now to show the Absurdly Extra Modes...
All will be played by Jaimers, Jaimers failed to clear the Absurdly Extra of RMI though, but he got very close and that Absurdly Extra is impossible on the full speed, since it got a TLB which Jaimers didn't even have enough ghost items for.
I'll start posting them here: Evanescent Existence Earthen Miraculous Sword and again, least but not least we have Reactivate majestical imperials Absurdly Extra Mode..
Now for my theme preferences, those will be my theme preferences but if you got any after listening to the themes, I'd love to know!
Tsugumi Umatachi's theme I love this theme for the way it builds up during the fight, every portion of the theme feels like it fits to her running around in the battle, the name of the theme fits very well with what she is doing ALL the time :V I also love her Stage theme because it builds up so well! c:
Adagumo no Saragimaru's theme I just love how emotional this theme is, since it's canon that Saragimaru feels love for Yaorochi (her big sister) it kinda goes to show these emotions, it's pretty cool, I also love how this theme got 2 climaxes instead of one, it's one of the themes I definitely rate as my favourite themes.
Sukune Katano's theme I just love how festive this theme feels.. It's rather strange but I want to dance to this, Really well composed and just makes me want to dance right away.
Sukune Katano's & Adagumo no Yaorochi's theme The second best stage 4 boss battle theme imo, I love how it feels pretty serious yet a little childish around some parts, they take it seriously in their own way. I like Yabusame Houren's and Tsubakura Enraku's theme a little more I love how this feels airhead-like, childish, serious, yet this is a brilliant masterpiece, it feels like you'll have quite the danmaku battle! (yes Team-C got a theme too, but I don't like that theme nearly as much as those 2 themes.)
Yabusame Houren's Evanescent Existence theme (Tsubakura Storymode) I feel like it's so challenging, it's full of tension, yet it got some childish tune in it that builds up to become totally terrifying, although Yabusame certainly isn't the smartest, she certainly is good at danmaku.
Fujiwara no Iyozane's theme so intense.. the tension this theme sounds terrifyi-childish...? It's both, I love how it alternates between being terrifyingly full of tension and being childish at the same time, it's so cool! Iyozane certainly is the aspiring pirate... I also love her stage theme!
Taira no Fumikado's theme I love this theme, the tension, the way it builds up, THE WAY IT FITS PERFECTLY WITH THE BATTLE IF YOUR GAME DOESN'T LAG. It's amazing, although the way the theme loops sucks a lot, in the video it's looped the best possible way so I can't complain about that, this theme feels final boss-ish because Fumikado was intended to be the final boss in the trial version (according to JynX's Musicroom) yet.. She got replaced with Shion for the final boss :V I still love this theme, it feels very climaxish, final-bossish yet it also feels inspiring, otherworldly, funny how she's literally otherworldly " Moon Child ~ Homunculus Dream" is her theme name, says enough.. JynX is a genius. I also love her stage theme for the reason it builds up from negative to very positive, it gives the spark of positivity that's needed after the many themes that feel a bit harsh
Shion's theme I love how this theme sounds like you're doomed, it's one of the most intensive themes, the stage portion being 2 fairies, doing nothing, with creepy background music, giving you resources even should make you wonder.. What kind of boss will you face... Yes, the kind of boss that's insane, that's why it's here where you'll use your spirit jar instead of your lives for survival. Make sure to not die too much.
Zuifeng Tenkai's theme possibly the theme I listened the most to, it's as chaotic as you can imagine, but this theme is so amazing, it just blows me away, I love it. Also I feel like this is a theme that would fit "One of the Old Dictators" which is Tenkai's title.. The Len'en games really got to do with dictatorships at times ehh? considering she most assumably helped Senri Tsurubami in her Mugenri opression... It pretty much makes sense there'd be more dictators? Pretty cool you get to deal with them though.. :V
Senri Tsurubami's theme the theme of Senri Tsurubami, it's as chaotic as her personality, amongst Youkai she is known to be a terrifying person, being a tyrannical person towards both youkai and humans, she's also in charge of a millitant faction opressing Mugenri.. Whilst her shrine from where she rules is located just a little outside of Mugenri, it's pretty scary to think about her leading over Mugenri.. luckily she's on vacations now and gave the task to defend Mugenri to Yabusame and Tsubakura, otherwise.. I guess things would be terrifying, this theme fits her a lot in that way.. Yup, as terrifying as the owner of the theme..
Kitsugai Sese's second theme The game starts with Sese, the game ends with Sese, she still doesn't know her real name, she just never found out so we will also never know.. Kitsugai Sese is the name she gave herself as she thinks it sounds pretty nice, Oh well, this theme is really climaxish, full of tension, it's pretty fitting for this phase of the EX, she's just an insane TLB.. It's really cool that there's a TLB though, it makes sense seen the amount of resources this EX stage gives you.. It also makes sense since this is the third shmup, if we include PoDD as a shmup in the Touhou games, we start with 2-3-4 right? this is Len'en 3, which is the third shmup, just like LLS was in the Touhou games, both got 2 EX bosses in the EX stage, I see a pattern here.
Sorry, I'll edit this topic tomorrow for more stuff, I'll stop here as I feel like I made good progression for today.

I will post the full story in a spoiler-tag for those who do not want to be spoiled.
Everyone finds themselves in another strange dimension, Although nobody knows where they are, they all want to get out. Yabusame then decides to reach the "goal" to get out, on her way she meets some of her friends which she battles and beats in the end, she then (stage 3) finds her best friend Tsubakura Enraku. which, having a different personality than she always has against Yabusame is rather strange. Although Yabusame didn't really notice it because she is an airhead. A little bit later Yabusame finds a "black sun with a torii floating in it" it's there where the most annoying of annoying people she knows is found. It's there where she is encountered by "Wilhelm von Clausewitz Halcyon HISUIMARU"-aka Clause, Clause who has gained a lot of power by her delusions. Clause thinking that getting out first by going through the "Black Star" gives power, makes her attack Yabusame Houren, which then, defeats her. When Yabusame thinks about Tsubakura being away already.. She doesn't know what to do and heads for the Black Star because she is an airhead; can't think of any better solution. In the Extra Stage, she sets out to find the mastermind behind this. She is encountered once again by Clause as the midboss, which still seems to be wanting to annoy Yabusame even more. Once again Clause is defeated; Yabusame tries to find the mastermind, finally getting to the end. She gets to the Senri Shrine, where she encounters Tsurubami Senri. A priest who once opressed the people of Mugenri, she then reveals she was Tsubakura Enraku all along in the incidents of EE. The actual Tsubakura Enraku had already won from Tsurubami, yet has asked Tsurubami to attack Yabusame once Yabusame arrives. So Tsurubami attacks Yabusame and is ultimately defeated, since Tsurubami had caused this all because she wanted a new protector for Mugenri, she had declared both Tsubakura and Yabusame as the new protectors, she wants to tell this to Tsubakura but the young scientist was already gone.
A few things I have to say to make it more understandable.
Tsubakura Enraku in the game is actually Senri Tsurubami, the causer of the incident. The incident was caused because she wanted to test who's ready to protect Mugenri, she disguised herself as Tsubakura to not be noticed by everyone along her way back to the Senri Shrine where she'd await everyone. Senri also has the power of Potentional, she can latent potentional, which can make any other power than hers, her own power too. the Senri Shrine is the place where Senri Tsurubami is the head-priest of, the Senri Shrine is located in front of the other world, she rules over Mugenri to some extent from the Shrine (basically, she's a dictator with her own millitant faction.)
Tsubakura Enraku is a young scientist which is called the biggest genius ever, although she herself considers that to not be true. She is befriended with Yabusame Houren although she likes to be rather rude towards her too, she dislikes Yabusame's airhead personality and tends to mock her for that.
Tsubakura's different personality in game is because Senri Tsurubami was disguised as her and didn't know of her personality towards others, normally Tsubakura would be rather rude to almost everyone; that even includes Yabusame.
The reason I called Yabusame Houren an airhead a lot of times is because JynX called her an airhead in his music room.

the full story
The weather in Mugenri became very cloudy one day, this is why Yabusame, Tsubakura and the newly incident resolver Kuroji have decided to find out who the perpetrator is; stop her. they all set out, along their way they find all sorts of youkai which they beat up, at some point (stage 3) they encounter Lumen Celeritas, a lazy youkai claiming to have been a youkai long ago. She's pretty destructive when she absorbs moonlight. She gets beaten pretty fast, at some point the heroines arrive at the place Sukune Katano resides. (the stage 5 boss) She was tricked into making a new sword for Adagumo no Yaorochi, by transferring the essence of the Tasouken into a clay sword (Tasouken was an old sword, also known as the Legendary Sword of Kusanagi.) the process by doing so makes it very cloudy however, this had to be stopped by the heroines which beat up Sukune, only to find Yaorochi at the top, swinging around with her newly formed sword, not really caring for the heroines but just caring about being able to use the sword she had loved for so long (the sword which she had luster for a long time) she swung her sword around in joy because it was her newly formed sword, ultimately getting defeated. the sword started attacking the main heroines as the clay wasn't able to hold the essence of the Tasouken stable, the sword got defeated too in the end. Yaorochi felt devastated, however after some time she felt like it didn't matter as she still had the sword which she loved for so long. Sukune also forgave her for tricking her into this, the two of them became good friends after that.
in the Extra Stage, the main heroines face Lumen Celeritas agian.. (as a midboss) Having absorbed the full moonlight made her crazy, yet she was defeated without too much trouble, in the end the heroines found Adagumo no Saragimaru, Yaorochi's younger sister which had asked Sukune to create a sword for her holding the essence of Tasouken. She later began to regret is as Yaorochi was cursed by the sword, also the Tasouken is actually very dangerous, having attacked the heroines on its own during the main incidents. She has watched this all from afar as she always stalks her big sister. (according to JynX this is because Saragimaru loves Yaorochi, you could see this as an official pairing :V) She attacked the main heroines for having beaten her sister, in the end she is defeated herself.
a few funny facts about her: Saragimaru's musical theme, Mono Eye ~ Ironic FATE, may also read as "Mono Ai". According to Jynx, it could refer to her "single eye" or maybe it's more like her one-sided love towards Yaorochi.
According to Jynx, she is the most mature and the only one with common sense in Mugenri.
Yabusame can't remember her name and calls her "Salami".
