I'm same as this. IN has the best gameplay of the 4, and so purely judging it as how fun it is to play IN stands out in front of the rest. Going on design, however, I'd say EoSD would come out on top. PCB has some exceptional parts, and then some really awful parts and I don't think it balances well. PoFV didn't make any sense to me, and the only good things to come out of it were Komachi and Eiki ;D

The problem with PCB was PCB syndrome. ZUN made a cool new framework but didn't know what to do with it, so he made everything around the philosphy that everything needs to push the limits, hence why so many stages have patterns where they fill the entire screen but only a small fraction of bullets are dangerous.

Perfect Cherry Blossom actually symbolizes death and departure, which can be heavily corresponded with my experiences of close people in my life passing away unexpectedly and unpredictably. It creates an intensely emotional experience for me personally, and its release date was in extreme proximity to the death of one of my siblings, so it is personally my favorite because I can reminisce and remember happier times, that and its also about release from grief, at least in my eyes. That's my reason.

That puts EoSD in front for me (yay!) although it seems I'm the only person who would put EoSD first!

I choose EoSD because it was my first Touhou game ever, it was also the first extra I ever cleared taking me about 200 tries (maybe 250) it was one of the games to which I was totally invested at some point in time.

PCB is the only one that feels properly good these days. EoSD hasn't aged well whilst IN has too many things wrong with it.

IN. Kaguya. Music. Yuyuko playable. Plus, it's really fun, imo.

Let me tell you a story to convince you EoSD is the best first era game, my dear friends. In October 2 1968 the mexican government massacred hundreds of students and arrested thousands of them who were holding a meeting for freedom, they made this in order to look good in front of the other countries for the Olympics which were to be held in Mexico 10 days later. This makes no sense. How does this relate to Touhou? it doesn't. if it doesn't make sense you must vote EoSD! That is all, I rest my case.

I've never played EoSD, but the cast is awesome and it looks cool.

I've never played EoSD, but the cast is awesome and it looks cool. You should, because the game is pretty significant and the characters are hugely important, most especially Sakuya, Remi and Flan. Just don't ask where your hitbox is...

It's aged as badly as PCB, IMO. IN is the only one of the four I feel aged well. Of course, age isn't a huge factor for me in determining how good the game is. Some of my favourite games come from over a decade ago and have aged terribly.

Yeah, I've heard about the invisible hit box. The only reason why I haven't played it is because I play easy and you have to play normal to reach Remi. IN, I do agree, has aged well. PoFV didn't age too badly, imo.

IN as a game isn't a problem but I have some issues with the way the bosses are done.

Perfect Cherry Blossom is by far my favorite of the three. Don't get me wrong, I love Imperishable Night as well, and EoSD is pretty okay too. But PCB has this aesthetic to it that's very beautiful. From the gorgeous background art, to the beautiful and creative patterns, to the delicious cherry border system, it remains to this day my favorite Touhou game.

I see a lot of difference between IN and PCB - much more difference at least than between EoSD and PCB. I also have more issue with IN than just the way the bosses are done.

IN aged way better than PCB.
But it doesn't stop the fact PCB is the best of this gen.

Legendary is the proper description considering it's second only to EoSD as being a proportional amount of the fanbase's first game, according to various official polls conducted throughout the years. Many would call both the quintessential installments that truly cemented Touhou's direction. Both PCB and EoSD are ranked amongst my favorites; they have a similar aura to them that's both indistinguishable and yet entirely independent of one another, and each of ZUN's artistic creations have similarities involving game-play and characters, but those two have similarities involving their "soul", if you will, which can easily be sensed and distinguished in each installment.

IN > EoSD > PoFV > PCB
I don't think they aged badly at all, I'd take all of them over the newer games.
